Keep yourself and your family safe when using opioids

Use and dispose of opioids responsibly

Opioid abuse, addiction and accidental overdose are very real problems in Central Oregon. If you have opioids in your home, there are some things you need to know to protect yourself and those around you.

Safety Advice

Storage & Disposal

Keep all controlled substances in a safe or locked cabinet. This will protect them from children and others.

If you have opioids that are no longer needed, take them to a disposal site in your community. Do not flush them or throw them away, not even if they are mixed in with other disposables.

Safe Use

Only take medication that is prescribed to you, and in the amount your provider has said is safe.

Keep a list of all medications you take for the next time you see a doctor, so they can be sure your medications are safe to take together.

Overdose Reversal

Overdose is a serious risk of taking opioids, and having medicine nearby that can reverse an overdose is critical. Ask your doctor to give you a co-prescription of nasal Naloxone, and make sure others around you know how to use it - it is not a medication you can use on yourself.
